With digital marketplaces becoming the norm, we do more and more of our shopping online. This can mean that we as consumers become complacent when it comes to deciding what platforms are trustworthy. Fraudulent people are trying to take advantage of people’s use of the internet for online shopping; therefore, it is easy to become victim to scams.

It is important to take action as soon as you realize you have become victim to a scam. The way that you report the scam will depend on the exact type of fraud you have become victim to; however, reporting it in good time will give you the best chance of getting your money back.

How should I report the consumer scam I have become victim to?

You should make sure to make a consumer fraud report by contacting the appropriate federal agency. One federal agency that may be useful for you is Consumer Action. Alternatively, if the fraud was a more serious one, you may want to contact the FBI.

Will I be able to get my money back after a fraud?

Getting your money back after a fraud or scam will be highly dependent on the type of activity it was. However, suing a scammer in court is always a possibility, and in the event of law enforcement agencies taking legal action, you may be able to claim a share of the damages.
