Errors on background and credit reports can be damaging

Many employers and landlords rely on background checks. Even some non-profits, such as the Ronald McDonald House, sometimes rely on them when deciding to whom they are going to provide services. For most people, this is not a problem.

There are some instances in which an error on a background or credit check can cause trouble. Errors on background checks or credit reports can cause considerable problems. These sometimes come up when you aren't expecting it.

Take immediate action

When you find out that you were denied because of something on one of these reports, you have the right to request a copy. This was established by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It gives you the opportunity to see what the requesting party saw so that you can determine your next steps. You may find multiple issues, so be sure to review the report line by line.

Once you find the item that caused the trouble, you need to get to the bottom of what's going on. This starts with determining where the report came from. You can contact the agency that issued the report to determine how to get it corrected.

Possible reasons for errors

There are several reasons why errors might occur. If you have a common name, there is a chance that it was mistakenly added because of the similarity of your name with the correct person's. If the information was supposed to be expunged, sealed or didn't result in charges being filed, you would have to contact the arresting agency or court to get the report corrected.

Some sources of information that credit and background aggregation companies use include court, driving, military, credit and employment records. Some also tap into educational records. The errors are sometimes the result of the reporting agency not removing things properly, but it is also possible that the aggregation company didn't update the report when it should have.

Unfortunately, errors on background and credit reports are more common than people realize. If you had an issue with this that resulted in your having to deal with a negative impact, you might decide that you want to do something about it. Taking legal action is possible, but you only have a limited amount of time to do this so be sure that you act swiftly. Learning your options and getting the case moving forward right away is beneficial.
